I serve in the Senate because I still believe in the American Dream.
I grew up sweeping floors and stocking shelves in my family’s small business. My parents, Bruce and Nancy, taught me the value of hard work. They taught me that if you put in the time and effort, and play by the rules, you could make a better life for your family and kids.
They taught me to believe in the American Dream. The promise that free people in a free country have unlimited potential.
That belief became my mission after I graduated from the Naval Academy and swore an oath as a Marine Officer to support and defend the United States and our Constitution.
For me and my fellow Marines, our mission was everything.
The mission was about the only thing we had in common. We came from different places and backgrounds, and we were of different races and faiths. That didn’t matter. We came together to get the job done.
I’ll never forget that lesson: no matter how difficult the task, a team with a shared purpose can reach any goal.
As Marines, we served to defend the American Dream’s promise – a promise that has inspired generations of Americans to reach for a better future.
That promise has lasted since our founding. But we can’t take it for granted. We all know our country faces new, difficult challenges today.
But, like my fellow Marines, the American people have a shared mission and nothing is impossible for a free people united behind a common purpose.
We need to do everything we can to keep freedom’s promise alive so all Americans can have the opportunity to reach their full potential – to fulfill their American Dreams for themselves and their families. It is up to us, here and now, and no one else.
That work is why I’m running for re-election to the US Senate.
