Angels Over Kiev Quilt Exhibit
This year’s Holiday theme at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is “A Celestial Christmas” featuring ‘Angels Over Kiev’, an artistic quilt exhibit by Brian Partin. Brian is a native Trojan. He was born in Troy, Ohio in the early 60’s. He was the youngest of four boys with a younger sister to soon follow. His Grandmother was a quilter of necessity. She used scraps and leftover material to make quilts for warmth in the winter.
Brian’s mother didn’t learn how to quilt, but longed to connect to those memories. While living in south Florida, he found a local shop that taught beginning quilting. He mentioned it to his mother, who was reluctant to attend classes alone, so Brian volunteered to join her for the six-week class. While she did not complete the class, he was hooked, and Brian’s mom became his lifetime supporter. He has since taken classes from a variety of local and international teachers. Later on he began teaching himself.
“I have tried a variety of creative hobbies over the years, trying to find one that expressed my creativity but that I also had some innate ability to do well. Painting, drawing, weaving, stained glass were all not a fit. I started quilting in 1991, 30 years ago in August. I took classes from both local and international teachers, and later became a quilting instructor myself. I still enjoy learning new techniques and trying to incorporate them into my work to accomplish my creative concepts. I love both piecing and applique. But, it is applique that has stolen his heart. I love the ability to create anything I can imagine, and love to throw as many techniques into something to achieve that vision.
I want my work to stand on its own, without it needing to be about me. Like an old Hymn from the church, I want it to survive without knowledge of its author. I have been using silk dupioni for this project so that the fabric does not date the piece. I want it to be timeless.”
Holiday Open House has been the signature event at the Hayner since it became a cultural center in 1977. For 44 years, the Hayner staff has planned a holiday celebration for the community, including a Children’s Day on Saturday as well as an outstanding display of holiday decor throughout the house for the month of December. Each year a host of decorators descends upon the Hayner house, re-envisioning and re-doing every room and hall in the three-story mansion. Interior designer David Fair will bring some holiday magic to the Study and Solarium. Brittany Stotler from Your Personal Florist will fill the Parlor with angels. When the Mary Nilsen and Donna Crosier crew transforms the Entry and East Room, we promise you will believe! Sheila Fulks and James Novotony will bring the sunshine of sunflowers to the Conference Room. Kristy Osting and her team from StoryPoint Senior Living will add some holiday happiness to the upstairs Hall. Artists Kelly Rank and Ginger Godfrey will transform the Art Gallery, and the Boardroom will be decorated by Georgia Bayman. The Art Studio will have the golden touch of Dawn Flory and the Homeschool Art students. Logan Eshelman of Towne Valley gifts has some surprises for the Ballroom. A special feature of the 2021 holiday decorating is the addition of Art Quilts by Brian Partin. Brian is a textile artist who lives in Troy, Ohio. He will present his dramatic and colorful collection of appliqued quits called, “Angels Over Kiev.” The free holiday decor and quilt exhibit is available to all from December 5 through January 2.
