This morning we’re following up on a story that ran last week, regarding supplementary material currently being examined by the Casa Grande Elementary School District. Following a meeting of the Governing Board on Tuesday, where community members came out to protest the material, district officials forcefully defended their academic program, and flatly denied a complaint that the district was attempting to promote critical race theory. The return of the gourds: “It hurt,” gourd grower Waylon Wuertz said of not being able to hold the annual gourd festival last year. “We had to pull money out of our 401(k) to make ends meet.” After the festival’s cancellation last year in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wuertz Farm is looking forward to the return of the gourd festival this year.
