Since the launch of the COVID-19 Citizen Science (CCS) study in March 2020, new and important findings have been discovered from data collected in over 83,000 participants worldwide. One analysis showed that certain behaviors can be associated with the prevalence of the infection that causes COVID-19 including being a healthcare worker, living with at least one school-aged child, having a pet at home, and having immunodeficiency. Another study revealed which indicators can predict viral symptoms of COVID-19 which included having high blood pressure, smoking cigarettes, and having anemia. Additionally, another paper highlighted how COVID-19 testing was underused in those who had developed a fever or chills and had a high temperature. This low testing rate could potentially contribute to transmission of the virus. Finally, one publication dove into the very nature of CCS as a longitudinal digital health cohort study offering insight into the future of clinical research.

As the pandemic persists, researchers still have much knowledge to learn especially as new variants arise and booster vaccines become available to the general public. Data from CCS will contribute to these key future findings which will have an impact for all.See all publicationsSTUDY SPOTLIGHT 🔬Changes to the COVID-19 Citizen Science study

The research team at UCSF continues to adapt the COVID-19 Citizen Science study to the current state of the pandemic. In the United States, third doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine are available to people who are immunocompromised. Similarly, Pfizer booster shots are available in the United States for people over 65 years old, or those who work in high risk settings. Study participants who have previously reported being fully vaccinated can be on the lookout for a weekly survey about getting a booster shot.  Researchers are interested in when participants get a booster shot, how side effects compare to earlier doses, and how it affects COVID-19 risk and severity. Not yet a participant? eGene
Join the eGene study and help us better understand the broader underlying causes of cancer! Your lifestyle and habits are key factors in our understanding of cancer. You can join whether you have cancer or not – your contribution will help others and matters to our work to end cancer.

The eGene study is a long-term study evaluating how lifestyle affects cancer risk and health outcomes. Our researchers are asking participants to complete an annual survey so that we may learn if certain behaviors (where you live, your medical history, or how much you exercise) are linked to an increase in cancer risk.
