It’s not a political game. Sen. Sinema’s position on the filibuster is becoming increasingly unsustainable and Arizona Democrats are speaking out. Gubernatorial candidates Katie Hobbes andMarco Lopez both indirectly called on Sinema to scrap the filibuster, while Arizona Senate and House Democrats released a letter directly asking Sinema to reform the Senate rule so we can protect our right to vote. These statements came as Arizonans grow increasingly frustrated by Sen. Sinema’s apparent willingness to allow Republicans to wield the filibuster to block the For the People Act, amid anti-voter attacks in state legislatures nationwide. Don’t miss this important piece on the filibuster and the For the People Act from the perspective of an Arizona veteran.
Arizona’s climate crisis. The pains of the climate crisis are already being felt here in Arizona as the Legislature refuses to addressmost of its effects. It was reported that Lake Mead’s water supply is at the lowest level in history, resulting from extreme drought conditions and water demands. Arizona also received its first excessive heat warning this year, with temperatures for the coming week forecast at up to 117°F across Central Arizona. Additionally, wildfire season is in full swing this year, with multiple fires burning over 263,000 acres across the state. Like the COVID crisis, the climate crisis continues to highlight disparities between communities, with already marginalized and underserved communities often suffering disproportionate effects.
MCAO drops the charges. Charges against the dozen 10/17 protestors who were falsely accused of being in a criminal street gang were dismissed with prejudice on Friday. These political prosecutions were dropped largely thanks to the work of Mass Liberation AZ and ABC15’s investigative series exposing the targeting, lies, and dubious evidence in protest cases brought by Phoenix PD and MCAO. Calls continue for Allister Adel and the MCAO office to face accountability for their abuses of power in this and other cases.
