This Week With Gosar

WASHINGTON D.C. – Here’s our top stories…

FINISH THE WALL!

Construction crews at work building the wall at the southern border.

Gosar Demands Congress Continue to Fund the Construction of the Border Wall:

I recently joined several of my fellow Republicans in Congress in sending a letter to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee demanding Congress include language to prioritize the continued and completed construction of the southern border wall and complimentary border security as Congress considers legislation to invest in our nation’s infrastructure. We have seen the consequences of Mr. Biden’s disastrous open border policies over the past few months. Gaps in the wall and unfinished sections along the border are only emphasizing the crisis created by Mr. Biden.

Gosar Takes Action to Defend the Right to Life:

Last week, I joined my pro-life colleagues in filing a discharge petition in support of H.R. 619, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. What’s a discharge petition, you might ask?  Admittedly, it’s little wonky, but basically, it’s a procedural way to get around Speaker Pelosi’s refusal to bring important legislation in which a majority of Members of Congress support to the House Floor for a vote.

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act states that if a child is born alive after surviving an abortion, any health care practitioner present must exercise the same degree of care to preserve the life and health of the child as any other child of the same gestational age would receive. The survivor must then be immediately transported to a hospital.

I also sent a letter this week to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to protest its recent decision lifting the in-person dispensing requirement for the abortion pill mifepristone, which is used to cause an abortion within ten-weeks of conception. Because of the risk it poses to women’s health, the FDA previously required states to only dispense mifepristone in a doctor’s office and taken under the supervision of a health care provider.

As someone who believes strongly in the sanctity of life, I was proud to stand in firm opposition with my other pro-life members to counter these liberal assaults on basic American values.

Washington D.C. 51st State?

A hand attempts to add a 51st star to the American Flag.

Gosar Opposes Democrats’ Unconstitutional D.C. Power Grab

This week, I voted against H.R. 51, unconstitutional legislation that would pave the way for Washington, D.C. to become the 51st state. The constitution specifically designates a federal district under the control of Congress. Therefore, any efforts to add another state to the union would require an amendment to the constitution.

But let’s not fool ourselves, this legislation is totally about packing the Senate with two additional Democrats and tilting the balance of power in the Senate.

Critical Minerals Are Critically Important

Gosar Introduces Bill to Secure Critical Minerals Supply Chain

This week, I introduced the American Critical Mineral Independence Act of 2021 with my colleague, Florida Representative Mike Waltz. This bill, the product of a joint effort between the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, is a much-needed step forward in supporting critical mineral development in the United States. This bill would drastically improve our ability to develop critical minerals by streamlining the massive, convoluted permitting process required under the National Environmental Policy Act and lesson our dependence on foreign sources for critical mineral.

I have been working on protecting and enhancing our critical mineral supply chain for several years. Why? Almost every modern convenience is dependent upon these minerals. Items like solar panels and photovoltaic cells, wind power turbines, electric vehicles, drones, fighter jets, radios, electronic shielding, combat equipment, batteries, electronics, and lighting all require critical minerals.

Applying Maximum Pressure on Iran

Former Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo joins Congressional Republicans in front of the U.S. capitol in announcement of the “Maximum Pressure Act.”

Gosar Joins House Republicans to Introduce Legislation Targeting Iran:

This week, several of my colleagues and I joined former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at a press conference to announce the introduction of the Maximum Pressure Act, legislation that would counter the failed appeasement strategies of the Obama and Biden Administrations. Mr. Biden, in particular, has abandoned the successful maximum pressure strategy that the Trump Administration employed on Iran, which made America and our allies, including Israel, safer by denying the Iranians resources they need to build a nuclear weapon or support terrorism.

Mr. Biden has begun to renegotiate the failed Iran nuclear deal, which is why I joined my colleagues and introduced the Maximum Pressure Act which accomplishes three things:

  1. Stops Mr. Biden from re-entering the Iran Nuclear Deal without a treaty ratified by the Senate.
  2. Codifies into law sanctions issued by President Trump.
  3. Expands sanctions against Iran.

Please find the bill text HERE and find a summary of the legislation HERE.

Other Highlights From This Week

Biden’s Border Crisis rages on, and how did Congressional Democrats respond? This week, they put forward more meaningless, partisan pieces of legislation instead of trying to deal responsibly with this crisis. These bad bills only exacerbate the border crisis. Democrats’ refusal to address the real issues is an abdication of their responsibility to lead.

I voted no on both these measures. It’s been 29 days and counting since Mr. Biden named Kamala Harris his Border Czar and she still hasn’t visited the border. Meanwhile, 29,000 illegal aliens have escaped into the U.S. since Mrs. Harris was tapped to manage Mr. Biden’s border crisis. The State of Arizona this week declared a state of emergency because of the crisis and National Guard troops have been called to the Arizona-Mexico border. I will continue to pressure the Biden Administration to visit Arizona to understand the scope of the problem and take action.

House Republicans rolled out our Energy Innovation package this week that included conservative solutions to clean energy, energy security, and more. Meanwhile, Democrats responded with their socialist Green New Deal that would bankrupt our economy. In response, I cosponsored the Trillion Trees Act, legislation that would solidify the U.S. as a leader in conserving, restoring, and growing 1 trillion trees – enough to sequester two-thirds of all manmade emissions in the atmosphere today.

The Department of Health and Services (HHS)recently granted a nonprofit organization with two no-bid contracts worth at much at $530 million to handle the surge of illegal aliens crossing the southern border. It appears these contracts were awarded after the nonprofit hired a member of the Biden-Harris transition team. In response to Mr. Biden giving contracts to his cronies, my colleagues and I sent a letter to HHS Secretary Becerra to investigate these allegations of misusing taxpayer dollars. Click HERE to read a copy of the letter.
